Big Dipper Ice Cream is out of this world!

Big Dipper Truck

Should you find yourself in Missoula or Helena Montana, you must make your way to Big Dipper ice cream. Handcrafted with only the finest, purest ingredients and served by true characters, it is the way ice cream should be. Lines form early and people are happy to wait a little for a cone, sundae, or a ice cream soda.

I had a Coconut cone, my husband had Espresso Heath, my daughter had White Mint Oreo, and all were delicious and fresh.

They also have a truck called “Coneboy” that shows up at various festivals. You can have the truck come to your function, too. If you spot the truck and if you think you’re too full for dessert, get a child’s size cone, and you’ll be glad you did.

Check out their web site for more information about their award winning shop, and let me know if you have visited them, and what your favorite flavor was.

Frozen Custard for the first day of Spring

Sure, the thermometer says it’s still winter in Indiana, but the calendar says it’s Spring. We visited the great Ritter’s Frozen Custard in Franklin, Indiana for scoop of their thick, delicious custard. This was the first Ritter’s which opened in 1989. They now have stands in the midwest states and Florida and Texas.

Frozen Custard is much like ice cream, but more dense due to less air in the mixture. You will find it all over the midwest. I have yet to see it in the far west states, or on the east coast. The custard can be served at a slightly warmer temperature than regular ice cream and is usually made fresh each day at the store. It has egg yolks added to the cream and sugar.  According to Wikipedia “In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration requires products marketed as frozen custard to contain at least 10 percent milkfat and 1.4 percent egg yolk solids. If it has a smaller percentage of egg yolk solids, it is considered ice cream.”

Today’s special flavor was chocolate covered banana, and in honor of Spring and the Bluth’s I had a scoop. (There’s always money in the banana stand.)

I made it into a sundae by adding butterscotch and my favorite, marshmallow topping. Oh it was good. Here’s a photo. The butterscotch is warm and causes the custard to melt just a bit, so it looks a bit soupy.

Real chocolate jimmies, at last!

When I was little, the sprinkles on ice cream were called jimmies, and they were real chocolate. Today’s sprinkles found on the grocery shelves are made with oils and artificial flavors and colors. They are just plain gross.
I had given up on finding chocolate jimmies and was ready to put them in my in memoriam section in the blog, but what to my wondering eyes should appear at the Whole Foods, but the real thing! These are called dark chocolate vermicelli, but believe me, these are the jimmies of my youth. Horray!

Side note: Jimmies were recently accused of being a racial slur. This is untue, and it is vetted on snopes. End of story.

Talenti gelato: molto benne

Oh wow, my daughter bought this talenti banana chocolate swirl gelato, and it is soooo good! I found it in the freezer, and was curious, and now I can’t put it back. The banana flavor is sweet and subtle, and there are dark chocolate shavings and swirls of caramel. Such an amazing combination!
Banana can be a tricky flavor. Often times it’s flavor is so fake in candies, but it’s very real here. The gelato is all natural, vegetarian, gluten free, HFCS free, Hormone free and Kosher. I’m glad that it comes in pints, because I know that I could eat more…
Go out and get some of this soon. I look forward to trying their other flavors.

Ben & Jerry’s Coffee Heath Bar Crunch, two great tastes make one super flavor

Yeah, I know this isn’t news, but sometimes it’s good to re-visit a winner.

Here’s the basic idea: take superior coffee ice cream, smash up a lot of Heath Bars, and mix. Ben & Jerry don’t just put bits of Heath in, there are huge hunks in there. It’s rich, and sweet, so one small bowl is very satisfying. This is a premium ice cream, and worth every penny.

Summer begins at Fanci Freez

Posted on

If your travels ever take you to Boise, Idaho you must have a shake or ice cream treat from Fanci Freez drive in. They offer over 50 flavor of shakes and sundaes. They have a crazy thing called a Boston Shake which is a shake with a sundae on top. Now, I grew up in Boston, and I have never seen this before….
This place is a gem, a wonderful throwback to simpler times.
Check it out if you can.
